About Bryce Lewan

Bryce David Lewan – Artist, Advocate, and Man in Recovery

I am Bryce David Lewan, a man in recovery with a passion for bringing experience, strength, and hope to those who still suffer. For much of my life, I battled mental health challenges and addiction, constantly searching for something outside of myself to feel whole.

Growing up, hockey and baseball gave me a sense of validation and belonging, but I still felt like I was never enough. Sports provided structure, leadership, and brotherhood, but they also allowed me to suppress the deeper struggles I never addressed. When my athletic career ended, I lost my sense of purpose, and all the emotions I had buried for years came to the surface. Not knowing where to turn, I followed the path many do—college.

I attended Lansing Community College and later Western Michigan University, but my focus quickly shifted from academics to drugs and alcohol. Substances became my escape, making me feel connected and whole, but I was unknowingly trapped in the cycle of addiction. I spent years running—traveling across Asia, Europe, and the United States—seeking peace but always returning to hopelessness.

Then, one day, I watched a man painting, completely immersed in his art. In a chaotic world, he radiated freedom and presence—something I deeply longed for. That moment sparked my journey into painting, a new outlet for expression. But even then, I was still searching outside of myself for validation. My addiction and self-destruction continued, leading me to a breaking point where I nearly took my own life.

By the grace of God, I found myself in treatment. Recovery changed everything. It gave me the chance to confront my pain, heal, and discover that true fulfillment comes from within.

Now, after 10 years of painting and embracing a life in recovery, I use my art to inspire others. My mission is to bring light to those in dark places—whether through murals in treatment facilities, artwork in businesses, or sharing my story. I want my work to serve as a beacon of hope, proving that no matter how lost we feel, recovery makes anything possible.

The only thing standing between us and our dreams is ourselves. So today, I step aside, embrace the love within me, and share it with the world.
